*Rue de la de Santé gets its name from the Maison de Santé (Hôpital Sainte-Anne) founded by Anne d’Autriche in 1651.
Between 6 August1909 and 2 June 1939, the corner of rue de la de Santé and boulevard Arago was the site of more than 40 public executions (by guillotine) including that of Max Bloch, the last person to be publicly executed in Paris and the second to last person to be publicly executed in France. Bloch, a 44 year-old native of Ukraine, was convicted of the murders of Mr. and Mrs. Gutowicz of rue Oberkampf. Max Bloch was executed on 2 June 1939. According to the 3 June 1939 issue of Le Journal Mr. Block refused the offer of a final cigarette.
